Red Bank Community Mourns Death of 16-Year-Old Student Struck by NJ Transit Train
A wave of grief swept through the community of Red Bank on Tuesday after authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old student from Red Bank Regional High School was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit train earlier in the morning.
According to officials, the tragic incident occurred involving NJ Transit Train No. 3218, which departed Long Branch at approximately 6:08 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Red Bank at 6:18 a.m. Authorities said the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision near the station.
Police Chief Mike Frazee confirmed that the victim was a student at Red Bank Regional High School. School administrators and staff members were quickly notified as news of the tragedy spread throughout the district. Counselors and support personnel were expected to be made available for students, teachers, and families struggling to process the devastating loss.
The identity of the teen has not yet been publicly released pending notification of additional family members and ongoing investigative procedures. Officials have also not disclosed further details surrounding the circumstances leading up to the incident.
A spokesperson for NJ Transit stated that the cause of the incident remains under active investigation. Investigators from NJ Transit Police, the Red Bank Police Department, and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene shortly after 8 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing emergency crews gathered near the tracks as the northbound train remained stopped just short of the station platform during the investigation.
The incident caused significant disruptions along the North Jersey Coast Line during the busy morning commute. Rail service between Long Branch and Matawan was temporarily suspended while authorities worked at the scene. NJ Transit implemented emergency shuttle bus service to assist stranded passengers.
Northbound commuters were transported by bus to the Aberdeen-Matawan station, where they were able to reconnect with rail service and continue toward their destinations. Southbound riders were similarly bused back to Long Branch as crews continued their investigation and cleanup efforts.
By approximately 10 a.m., NJ Transit announced that train service had resumed along the affected corridor, though delays of up to 30 minutes continued throughout the late morning hours.
The tragedy has left many in the Red Bank community heartbroken, particularly fellow students and parents who are grappling with the sudden loss of a young life. Messages of sympathy and support began circulating online throughout the day as residents expressed condolences to the victim’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers.
