Tennessee Trucker Nathan Harrell Hailed as Hero After Risking His Life to Save Kayla Gilbert Following I-840 Crash in Rutherford County

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. — A Tennessee truck driver is being praised as a hero after risking his own life to rescue a woman trapped inside a crashed vehicle on Interstate 840 early Sunday morning.

Nathan Harrell, described by many as courageous and selfless, suffered devastating injuries after stepping in to help Kayla Gilbert following a serious crash along the interstate in Rutherford County. Despite the traumatic ordeal, Gilbert says she believes Harrell saved her life.

According to reports, the incident began when Gilbert was driving home along I-840 when one of her front tires suddenly blew out. The unexpected tire failure caused her to lose control of the vehicle before crashing into the concrete median barrier.

The damaged vehicle reportedly came to rest partially inside an active lane of traffic on the dark interstate, creating an extremely dangerous situation for both Gilbert and approaching drivers.

Gilbert sustained a severe forehead injury during the crash that later required eight stitches. Injured and disoriented, she remained inside the disabled vehicle moments after the collision.

That is when Nathan Harrell, who was traveling through the area in his truck, stopped to help.

Witnesses and family members say Harrell immediately recognized the danger and began urging Gilbert to get out of the vehicle before another crash occurred. Without hesitation, he rushed toward the wreckage despite the risks posed by oncoming traffic.

Moments after Harrell helped Gilbert escape from the vehicle, another car reportedly slammed into part of the wrecked automobile.

As the secondary collision unfolded, Harrell suddenly found himself trapped in an extremely dangerous position with little time to react. In an attempt to avoid being struck, he jumped over a nearby concrete barrier — unaware the crash scene was located on an elevated overpass.

Harrell fell approximately 25 feet to the ground below.

The fall left the truck driver with catastrophic injuries, including five broken bones in his back, nine broken ribs, a punctured lung, and internal bleeding. He remains hospitalized while undergoing treatment and beginning what doctors say will be a lengthy recovery process.

Despite his own pain and recovery challenges, Harrell has received overwhelming praise for his bravery and willingness to put another person’s safety before his own.

Gilbert recently visited Harrell in the hospital to personally thank the man she now calls her “guardian angel.” During the emotional visit, she embraced him and presented him with a Superman shirt as a tribute to the heroic actions that likely saved her life.

Family members say Harrell never viewed himself as a hero and simply acted because he knew someone needed help.

Loved ones also shared that Harrell is the primary provider for his family and supports three children, making the road to recovery especially difficult for those closest to him.

The story has deeply moved people across Tennessee and beyond, with many praising Harrell’s courage, compassion, and selflessness during a terrifying moment on Interstate 840.

As he continues recovering from his injuries, countless supporters are rallying around Nathan Harrell and his family, honoring the truck driver whose split-second decision to help a stranger likely prevented an even greater tragedy.
