Toby Cornett Obituary, Johnson City; Community Mourns Tragic Death
A tragic late-night crash in downtown Johnson City has left 34-year-old Toby Cornett dead and three others injured after a vehicle lost control and struck multiple objects early Saturday morning.
Authorities report the incident occurred around 1:29 a.m. near West Main Street, across from Trek Bicycle Johnson City. Investigators say the vehicle veered off course, went over a curb, and crashed into a nearby parking area. Witnesses described a loud, sudden impact that broke the overnight calm in the downtown area.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the vehicle hit a lamp post and street signage before coming to rest in a landscaped area. Emergency responders arrived quickly and found multiple occupants injured at the scene. Cornett was rushed for medical care but later died from his injuries.
Three other individuals—two 23-year-olds and a 22-year-old—were also hurt in the crash. Officials have not released detailed information about their conditions but confirmed that all survived and received hospital treatment.
The driver, identified as 36-year-old Steven Kotsonis, was arrested following the investigation. He is facing multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, DUI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, and failure to exercise due care. Authorities said he is being held without bond. Investigators also noted that charges may still be considered for one of the passengers involved, though further details have not been released.
Toby Cornett’s death has left his family, friends, and the Johnson City community grieving. As the investigation continues, residents are reflecting on the sudden and devastating nature of the crash and expressing condolences for those affected.
Officials say the Tennessee Highway Patrol investigation remains ongoing as evidence from the scene continues to be reviewed.
