A fatal shooting in Hopkins County, Texas, on Monday, May 12, 2026, has left one man dead and an entire community searching for answers after a confrontation at a residence turned deadly.
According to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a home in the northern part of Hopkins County following reports of an active shooting. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered that Buck Clary had been shot during a confrontation at the residence.
Investigators say Ring doorbell footage captured Clary approaching the home, yelling, and striking the glass panel of the front door with enough force to shatter it. Authorities reported that the video appears to show Clary reaching through the broken glass and into the doorway moments before the homeowner discharged a firearm.
The homeowner allegedly fired through the door, striking Clary at close range.
Hopkins County EMS responded quickly and transported Clary to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel attempted lifesaving treatment. Despite those efforts, he was later pronounced deceased by a Justice of the Peace.
Detectives continue investigating the events leading up to the confrontation and have not yet released information regarding any prior relationship between Clary and the homeowner. Authorities have also not publicly disclosed what may have prompted Clary to go to the residence that evening.
The incident remains under active investigation as detectives review all available evidence, including Ring doorbell footage, physical evidence from the scene, and witness statements.
At this time, no charges have been filed against the homeowner. Investigators indicated that Texas self-defense and property protection laws will be considered as part of the legal review process.
Authorities stated that the fact Clary allegedly broke the glass and reached inside the doorway may play a significant role in determining whether the homeowner’s actions fall within protections provided under Texas law.
The shooting has deeply affected the Hopkins County community, where residents are reflecting on how quickly situations can escalate into tragedy. Family members and loved ones are now grieving the sudden loss of Buck Clary as investigators work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that final decisions regarding the case will not be made until all evidence has been thoroughly examined.
