It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn Kay Buckner, who peacefully passed away at her home on May 9, 2026, at the age of 85, with her two children holding her hands. Marilyn was born on February 5, 1941, in Oklahoma City to Clyde and Virginia (Nusz) Waters. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and a deeply cherished presence in every life she touched.
Marilyn spent her early years in Oklahoma, living near Loyal, where she developed a love for family, animals, and the outdoors. She graduated from Loyal Public Schools in 1959 as salutatorian, excelling in academics and athletics, including serving as the pitcher on a state championship softball team. After graduation, she worked at local banks in Kingfisher and Hennessey, beginning a lifelong connection to her community.
In December 1959, Marilyn married Lloyd “Pete” Buckner. Together they built a life centered on farming, family, and faith. For 65 years, they shared a strong partnership filled with hard work, love, and devotion. Marilyn embraced every role on the farm and at home, becoming known for her strength, skill, humor, and unwavering dedication to her family.
In 1974, Marilyn began what would become one of her greatest callings—serving as the Hennessey High School secretary for 41 years. She became a guiding light for generations of students, offering encouragement, compassion, and support. Her impact on the school community was profound, earning her induction into the Hennessey High School Hall of Fame and the Lifetime Eagle Award.
Marilyn also loved dancing with Pete, attending community events, and serving through organizations such as the Child Study Club, First United Methodist Church, and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.
She is survived by her children Steve (Diann) and Melanie; grandchildren Olivia (Kaden), Brok (Kim), Staci (Dustin), Cody (Chelsea), Colby (Kenna), Ryan, and Sailor; her brother Charlie Waters (Kristy); and many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Pete, her parents, an unborn child, and many loved ones.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Hennessey High School Auditorium.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Marilyn Buckner Eagle Spirit Scholarship Fund, honoring her lifelong dedication to students and community.
